Fifth Annual Grand River Motorcycle Ride for Dad

2008 marks the Fifth Annual Grand River Ride for Dad as it continues its fight against prostate cancer. Hundreds of riders take part in this one-day pledge ride as police escorts guide them on a parade through Kitchener and Waterloo, then onto a 200 km poker run with stops in Elora, Brantford and Guelph. It's a fun-filled, family oriented day that is sponsored by the Waterloo Regional Police Association and the Grand River Hospital Foundation.

Since its birth in 2004, the Grand River (Kitchener) Ride for Dad has raised over $230,000 for prostate cancer education in the local community and research at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre. With rides taking place in 18 cities for 2008, the Motorcycle Ride for Dad has raised over $2,300,000 nationally in its eight short years.

"It's important for us to bring attention to this deadly killer that most men cannot even bring themselves to talk about," notes David Mathes, Co-Chair of the ride and Staff Sergeant with the Waterloo Regional Police Service.

The 2008 Grand River Motorcycle Ride for Dad will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2008. The Ride departs at 9:00 am sharp from the Kitchener Auditorium, 400 East Avenue Kitchener, Ontario. Registration begins at 7:00 am.

The Cause - Prostate Cancer

Each year, 18,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed and 4,300 Canadian men die of the disease.

There are an estimated one million men with prostate cancer in Canada. Most do NOT know they have it. In fact, it is rumoured that only 20% have been diagnosed and are being treated. The remaining 800,000 live with a time bomb ticking in their body.

Many men are hesitant to discuss possible prostate problems openly, even with their doctor, yet prostate cancer is the number one cancer in Canada in terms of incidence.

Dr. Gad Perry from the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre says: "Prostate cancer is curable if found early. Men need to talk to their doctors about it and have their PSA checked. I'm convinced we can dramatically reduce the suffering and death caused by this cancer."
